Our Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP) outlines Ōtorohanga District Council’s strategy for managing waste within our district. Our latest WMMP was adopted in April 2024.

A District Waste Assessment (when someone comes in and looks at everything we are doing in this space, what our district is sending to landfill, what our district is recycling) provided the basis for this updated WMMP to address key issues identified within the assessment. We have also aligned our WMMP with with Te Rautaki Para (the New Zealand Waste Strategy).

Our WMMP sets out:

  • Priorities for how we should manage waste in line with the ‘Waste Hierarchy’
  • Ensures waste does not create a ‘nuisance’.
  • ‘Has regard to’ Te rautaki para (the New Zealand Waste Strategy) and other key government policies, which emphasise a circular economy (sustainable process) for waste.
  • Considers the outcomes/issues in the Ōtorohanga District Waste Assessment.

A copy of our current WMMP can be found on the right hand side of this page under "documents".
