Can I nominate someone for consideration? I know a young person who could be perfect?

Rangatahi are identified through engagement with council. This can be through school workshops, Mayors Task Force for Jobs, consultations and or community activities. We don't hold an open submission process but instead work through an informal nomination process via kaiako(teachers) at schools and community leaders.

Where are Tuia reps based for the year?

Rangatahi continue to weave their own personal journey outside of Tuia wananga so they can often be based where they are studying or working and we can design the programme around their individual needs.
In addition we make welcome space for them to become a part of our Council team for the year, offering them desk space, wi-fi and friendly informal 'colleagues type atmosphere at our office on Maniapoto Street.

Are they paid?

No, the Tuia Programme is attended on a volunteer basis. They are taken through the expectations before they accept the position. Although they are given knowledge for their basket and shown leadership skill that they are encouraged to take on board.

Who covers the cost of the four wananga across the country?

Tuia Charitable Trust created by Tuia Rangatahi and Tūkaha Global Consultancy Ltd fund and support the kaupapa along with the funding from Mayors taskforce for Jobs.
All travel costs including food and accommodation for the four wananga across the rohe are covered.

What happens at the end of the year?

Tuia rangatahi can join the Ōtorohanga Tuia Group where alumni share their experiences and build ideas together. After the programme finishes there are many ways to continue to grow personally and give back to the community in many different ways.
Like any relationship- a connection the Tuia rangatahi builds with their Mayor and Council staff over the year can continue after graduation.

Where are the wananga?

They are selected and designed by the national Tuia organisation and change each year. Usually they are a mix of South and North locations and often are places where Tuia reps may not have been before. - Exciting!
