  • The purpose of the Tōkihi Phase 1 – Pilot Project (TP1) initiative was to focus, connect and restore iwi to their roots and identity for the benefit of generations to come.
  • This is a Iwi designed & Led Kaupapa that plan to strengthen Māori, Environmental Restoration, Education, History and Community.
  • This project aims to restore rivers and streams adjacent to each of the six marae and train its participants in appropriate local plant species and riparian margin planting.
  • Restore local iwi connection to the river and develop a succession plan framework that can be utilised by all / any marae to develop individual members capacity and capability in the taiao and in relation to their own history.

Funding allocation

Education and Restoration - $90,000

  • Taiao Education wānanga
  • Toku Iho methodology establishment

Development - $10,000

  • Establish a Waka Club

Expected Outcomes of this investment

OUTCOMESMEASURES
Restore riparian marginsRestore rivers and streams adjacent to each of the six marae and train its participants in appropriate local plant species and riparian margin planting. The measure will be the planting of 700+ native plants
Develop individual members capacity and capability in the taiao and in relation to their own history
Develop the Tōkihi Phase 1 Succession Plan framework and taketake.(values) through 6 wānanga at local marae. The measure will be the development of the Framework.
Create connection and collaboration between marae, local schools, and corporate entitiesLocal school and Corporate entities are invited to and participate in the aspects of the overall kaupapa. The measure will be the number of students and corporate entities that participate
Locals participate in a local waka clubResearch and establish a Waka Club in Ōtorohanga
history and the environmental sector as a career pathwayTo provide an education pathway for rangatahi in relation to the environment sector and local history research. The measure will be the number of rangatahi that identify local history and the environmental sector as a career option



About this funding

Organisation: Trust Waiwaiā Ltd (TWL) is a limited liability company.

The Ōtorohanga District Council has been allocated $2.6 million from the Government as part of the Better Off Fund (BOF). This is to provide funds to councils nationwide to support community development and climate resilience as they transition away from managing 3 Waters, now known as Affordable Waters.

Through workshops and voting processes, four priority projects were identified and approved by Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) on behalf of the Government, which included $100,000 for the "Mauri o Waiwaiā I te Awa o Waipā – Tōkihi Phase 1", see related pages for the background story.
