We are excited to be making our communities a little safer

Our Speed Management Plan (SMP) 2024 was developed to to support our overall road safety goal of reducing deaths and serious injuries within Ōtorohanga District. The SMP was adopted by Council in March 2024 after several years of effort to comply with changing central government direction, and endorsed by the Director of Land Transport on 18 October 2024 - you can have a read of it here.

AS a result of our new SMP being adopted, Ōtorohanga District Council have now installed new signage on the following roads:

Huiputea Drive 50-60-50km/hr

Mangauika Road 60 km/hr

Ouruwhero Road Extended 50 km/hr zone into a 80 km/hr

Old Te Kuiti road 70 km/hr already installed (official legal speed now)

Philips Avenue Variable speed of 30 km/hr pasted Ōtorohanga Primary school during school pick up and drop off times.

Waitomo Valley Road 80 km/hr

Road safety goes beyond our obligation to prevent deaths and injuries, to improve lives and lifestyles too. By ensuring that everyone feels safe using our transport network we open up opportunities for a more diverse use of modes and opportunities for improvement in health such as letting children walk, bike or scooter to school.

Influencing road user behaviour and improving our driving culture will continue to be critical to making significant gains in road safety. All users of our roads, streets and footpaths have a responsibility to make good choices and follow the rules, while central and local government have a responsibility to support and enforce that behaviour.
