Better Places Together has now been formally adopted by Ōtorohanga District Council. This exciting project will enhance Kāwhia and Aotea, with new concept designs for Aotea Beach and Omimiti Reserve, and an urban design plan for Kāwhia township – with a special focus on upgrading Jervois Street.
The adopted Aotea Beach and Omimiti Reserve plans build on existing recreation spaces with improvements like better pathways and parking, ecological restoration, new community facilities, shade and seating, play areas, event spaces, and cultural features that celebrate local heritage.
In Kāwhia, the adopted urban design plan will guide how to make the town more connected, inclusive, safe, and enjoyable for locals and visitors. The Jervois Street upgrade will create a more attractive, accessible, and safer main street with features such as speed calming, better crossings, and a stronger sense of place.
ŌDC worked alongside the Kāwhia Community Board, mana whenua in both Aotea and Kāwhia, and a range of organisations with intersecting interests. Engagement with community groups and public open days helped to ensure Better Places Together - Kāwhia and Aotea reflects the community’s vision for the future.
We’re also proud to share a community-led proposal for a Kāwhia Fitness Trail, developed to support health, wellbeing, and active lifestyles in the area.
