Tourism is a growing part of Ōtorohanga’s economy and identity. Local operators, Council and Elevate all recognise the need for a more collaborative, future focused approach to how our district tells its story and attracts visitors. The idea for the Tourism Marketing Playbook came from conversations about the opportunities ahead and the importance of building tools and strategies that reflect who we are, while also supporting our businesses and communities to thrive.
Why it’s important
Tourism doesn’t just bring visitors - it creates jobs, supports local businesses, strengthens community pride, and shares our unique stories with the world. But to do this well, we need to work together. The Playbook is about creating a shared narrative and providing practical resources that will:
Help tourism businesses and the wider community tell our story in authentic ways
Build a sustainable, resilient visitor economy that benefits everyone
Position Ōtorohanga in a competitive tourism landscape while staying true to our heritage and values
What the plan is
The Playbook will be a strategic and practical digital toolkit that includes:
A shared district narrative that celebrates Ōtorohanga’s unique identity
A collection of marketing resources and how-to guides for tourism businesses (covering topics such as social media, AI, cultural storytelling, funding, working with the travel trade, and using industry data)
A joint action plan showing how Council, Elevate, mana whenua and local operators will collaborate to grow a thriving visitor economy
Co-designing the Playbook
To make sure the Playbook reflects the voices and aspirations of our district, we are holding industry and mana whenua workshops. These sessions are about more than consultation, they’re a chance to co-design the tools, stories, and strategies that will shape Ōtorohanga’s tourism future together.
