What community focused activities could you do in this space?
The Ōtorohanga District Council is offering use of the building at $0 rental - for a limited time- to support our people to do neat things.

Background

The Referees Room has long been a gathering point for the community. However, in recent years, its use has declined and now is not utilised. We recognize the importance of an under-used space that might be helpful to our community so we have decided to try out offering it for $0 rental for a limited time - to see if it helps encourage some neat things to happen.

    Occupancy-Policy-and-Guidelines.pdf

  2. Use of the Tigers Club (the orange building) next door is not included.

  3. The building is not a domestic space and cannot be used as a residence or slept in at any time.

  4. We are prioritising medium term activities that run over months rather than days, and that have a maximum length of six months.

  5. The building can be used 24 hours/ 7 days a week.

  6. Rent is $0 as per the current Ōtorohanga District Community Occupancy Guidelines.

  7. Groups will need to cover the costs of all utilities, including power, water, consumables, and organise your own regular rubbish removal.

  8. Electricity and water are connected but the group will be invoiced by Council.

  9. There is a basic heat pump.

  10. The building is offered on an 'as is' basis, as Council will not be doing any improvements such as painting, cleaning or maintenance.

  11. The building has a basic kitchen (no oven, no fridge), a simple working bathroom and an open plan workspace, with some tables, couch, and chairs.

  12. The space can handle messier activities that would not be possible in other hire spaces within town, e.g. clay work, carving, gardening, film, theatre, children's activities, after school programmes, design, games.

  13. Council insurance will cover the building, but users take responsibility for any property left in the building.

  14. There will be one keyholder and groups need to organise access with their keyholder.

  15. At the end of the period of occupation, groups need to remove all rubbish, clean the room and remove any items moved into the building.

  16. A bond of $100 will be required to cover any rubbish removal at the end of your stay.

  17. According to demand and interest in this first call out Council may open up further expressions of interest later on in the year- but this is not guaranteed.

We are unlikely to prioritise ideas/expressions of interest that:

  • Are based around occasional meetings or short activities, as there are many other venues in Ōtorohanga that can be used by community groups on an hourly or daily basis;

  • Involve long term residence;

  • Involve any activities which may sublet the space for profit;

  • Require Council to spend additional funds to improve, clean, or add to the space.
